Students of our school to Estonia
05 Mar 2019

Five students and two teachers of the 4th senior High School of Volos travelled to Estonia, in the town of Tamsalu, to participate in the Erasmus+ project entitled “Young Entrepreneurs- Learning by experience”. Schools of Portugal and Belgium comprise the team of this project, which is coordinated by Latvia.

All the visitors stayed at the town of Tamsalu and they had the opportunity to travel and visit important sights in the area, such as The Limestone Museum, the castle of Rakvere, the oil wells, orthodox monasteries, travelling up to North Baltic area to the village of Kasmu, which flourished in the past and it is famous for its rich naval history and tradition.

The students presented everything they had done during this project and the research they had carried out together with the local authorities and at the same time they were informed about all these things by their peer students from other countries.  Within the framework of this project and in order to promote young entrepreneurship, students visited several local businesses which employed pioneer and innovative production techniques, such as stock-breeding farms and art studios, where lamb wool produced in the farms is exploited through the pioneer technique of ‘’Felting’’ and modern youth companies such as “Lacos” where the students were introduced to the principles  of a successful youth company. The students also visited the countryside of Laane-Viru and the Naval Museum, where they learnt the historical importance of ship navigation for the area up to the era of the Russian Empire. The students realized the importance the Estonians attribute to the element of the sea, which, besides being the fundamental basis for their navy, their trade and fishing, it is also a source of inspiration for the local artists.

From the coasts and the freezing beautiful landscapes of Estonia to the other side of the country with the forests which show deep respect for the nature and which host standard energy production unities and wood process unities together with magnificent, old manors such as Palmse, Sagadi and Vihula Manors, which played an important role in local history and now they have been converted into museums, luxurious hotels offering a great variety of activities in the countryside. Entrepreneurhip has played an important role in the history and in the process of development of the country as it blends the old with the new, showing always respect for the environment. Through all these visits to local enterprises and the speeches and lectures given by Estonian experts on these issues, our students gathered valuable knowledge and first-hand experience, which they used in the projects they carried out together with students from the other countries. The next meeting of this project will take place in Belgium in late March.
